Now I've had the time of my life. No, I never felt like this before. Yes, I swear it's the truth, and I owe it all to you.
These lyrics are recognized from one of the most prominent movies of the 80's: "Dirty Dancing."
Created in 1987, this film wasted no time in introducing a while new aspect of dancing, therefore "Dirty" in the name of the film.
Set in the 1960's, Frances Houseman, aka Baby, goes on a family vacation to a summer resort in the Catskill Mountains. The resort is quite upscale, but this isn't unfamiliar territory for Baby. She
grew up in privileged surroundings complete with butlers, maids, and servants. Naturally, Baby will go on to a private university and end up in the arms of a doctor, just like her father, and make her whole family proud.
While the rest of her family goes on to play the resort games with the rest of the vacationers, Baby goes off to explore on her own. She comes across Johnny, the camp's dance instructor, at a party with all the other young teens that work at the camp. This is where Baby is first introduced to dirty dancing.
Now, this isn't any kind of dancing she has seen before, like the traditional slow dancing and foxtrot. This new dancing involves grinding and tight embracing. Baby is shocked, excited, and intrigued all at the same time, even more so when she sees that Johnny and his dance partner are at the center of it all.
Despite their different backgrounds, Baby can't seem to get Johnny out of her mind. Knowing that her father would never approve, she sneaks away from her family to spend time with Johnny. Soon she finds out that Johnny's dance partner is unable to dance with him in an upcoming competition, so Baby decides to fill in.

Because of her inexperience with dirty dancing, she has to spend hours of training and teaching with Johnny for the dance competition. The more time the two spend together, the more infatuated they become with one another.

Baby and Johnny's blossoming romance suddenly is interrupted when Johnny's dance partner has an emergency that only a doctor can fix. Baby's father is the only doctor at the camp.
Her father finds out what she has been doing during her time at the resort and who she has been spending her time with. He forbids her from seeing Johnny and any of "those other people."
Can Baby, daddy's little girl, go against her family, and all their hopes and dreams for her, in the name of dance, love, and her own happiness?
While Baby was played by Jennifer Grey, and Johnny was played by Patrick Swayze, the two make an awesome couple on and off the dance floor.
Directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Eleanor Bergstein, "Dirty Dancing" won several awards, including the ASCAP, Oscar, and Golden Glob for best original song, "I've Had the Time of My Life."
After this movie came out, millions around the world began dancing dirty. "Dirty Dancing" isn't just a chick flick either; it's for anyone and everyone who loves to dance.
With a great plot and excellent dance moves, this movie certainly deserves it's title as an 80's pop culture. It proved that opposites really do attract and dancing really is harder than it looks! Of course, dance practice with someone like Patrick Swayze might make it all worthwhile!
